What the award recognises

The review looked at how directly money reaches students, how carefully recipients are verified, and how openly a nonprofit reports back. Three things we hold to:

How the verification work actually happens

Verification is the least glamorous part of a scholarship nonprofit and the part the award weighed most heavily. Every student who applies submits a government-issued photo ID, and enrolment or income documentation where they can provide it. A human reviewer — an administrator or an approved volunteer judge — opens each document in a controlled viewer, checks it against the application, and records a decision with a reason. Identity documents are deleted once the decision is made, and reviewers never see a student's home address, phone number, date of birth or ID number.

Donors who want to fund a named student complete their own one-time check. That is the only situation on this site that requires it: gifts to the general fund and to the Kids in Nepal fund need no account and no ID at all.

What a receipt looks like

Who does the work

The foundation runs on a small administrative team and a growing panel of volunteer judges — teachers, professionals and graduate students who read applications, score them against a published six-criterion rubric, and earn documented service hours for the time they give. Judges see anonymised applications. They do not see names, schools or contact details while scoring, which is how a student from a small rural school competes on equal footing with a polished submission from a magnet programme.

What this award does not mean

It does not mean every application gets funded. Demand still runs far ahead of what we can pay, and the hardest part of the year is telling a verified, deserving student that the money ran out before their file came up. It also does not mean we are large. Recognition of this kind tends to imply scale we do not have. What it does mean is that the process is sound, and that scaling it would not require compromising it.

The honest numbers behind the recognition

We would rather publish a modest figure that is true than a large one that is convenient. Every tuition payout on this site is attached to a payout record on the student's profile, showing the school paid and the date it cleared. If a student withdraws after a partial raise, the remaining balance is either redirected with the donor's consent or refunded. Nothing sits quietly in an account.
